This year marked the 13th year that Strider Steve Patt has put on the gem of a race known as the Stevens Creek 50K. Great weather and a fine field of runners showed up to enjoy the trails of the open space preserves around us (including our namesake Stevens Creek County Park).
Strider (and Quicksilver racer) Jean Pommier took the overall win in an impressive 4:17:19, with Stephen Gunnar Wassather coming in second (4:32:10) and Michael A. Jimenez rounding out the men’s podium in third. The impressive part of Jean’s performance was the fact that he is 10 yrs older than the thrid place finisher, and 26 yrs older than the second place finisher!
On the women’s podium, Kendra Hershey repeated her win from 2012 with another strong performance, being chased by Danwei Guo (literally) for second. Fellow Strider Lina McCain came in a solid third, continuing her incredible string of race performances this year.
Other Striders also had good performances: Mike Kreaden (9th), Kim Espat (15th), Dennis Conner (28th) and Peter Michalek (39th). Of note is that both Kim Espat and Peter Michalek both ran their first ultras, after having joined and trained with the Stevens Creek Striders. Welcome to the ultra club!
